Massive, rock-hewn peaks dwarf a tiny line of horsemen as they thread their cautious way along a narrow trail. Fourteen strangers, their survival dependent on collective wit, have chosen to brave the sometime hostile environment of the Anaconda-Pintlar Wilderness in Western Montana.

It is August1976. Management plans are afoot to deny the use of this magnificent landmass to those who ride horses for pleasure and adventure. In a trip frought with tragedy and danger, this small group sets out to prove that horsemen can tread as lightly on the land as can those hikers sporting backpacks.
